Prelude 00:51
Hey, hey you. Hi it’s me. Thanks for tuning in and welcome to today’s cheap educational production aimed at the young impressionable listener who may be having the foolish desires to take a career in.... music (laughter). Let’s start this little ill conceived tale... Back on the road after an unplanned tire change Lil’ Jakey checks himself in the mirror and smiles. He is blissfully unaware that his troubles have just begun. We go now to the passenger seat of his car as he breaks into song.

Cutting through the dead of night Moons Corona shining bright Being out on the road I play my gigs and then get home But there’s still 100 here to drive 60 minutes past midnight I looked up to the skies See the stars above And all I want to do Yes all I want to do All I want to do Is get home to my love Folks home in bed while i’m eating up the road Having this time to myself I think about the world The random chance that I was born The pressure to conform About fortunes careless hand Or the politics of man All them rich old geezers With the lab made diseases And they do what they pleases As the temperature increases

Aspiration 02:49
All my friends and buddy’s say they’ve got it made Cause they like hanging out in this dirty bat cave But when it’s my turn to sheddin’ yeah I’ve got a little plarn I’m gonna hitch me a ride and move to Wuhan It ain’t no fun living in a bat lung... Whatcha think I’d do? When I shed and left them they were standing all around I found a fine location on the outskirts of town The next thing you know I’m on a big jet plane You’ll see me sleeping in the White House one of these days Sleeping in the White House one of these days It ain’t no fun living in a bat lung... whatcha think I do?

Hi it’s me, just killing time in cellblock 7315... Lockdown. Now let’s hear Jakey play that guitar... look at him go!
5.
Hi it’s me again, cellblock 7315. Remember lil’ Jakey? Well the guy is a mess. Weeks of lockdown and over exposure to some secret chrome formula from the 90s has left him in the pits. Anyways, under his own grand illusions he turns to us and speaks; “I’ve just gotta sing with a high voice!” You’ve got me in a lockdown You forget your love is hot Lockdown... I have no breaks I cannot stop Lockdown... She had her hands upon my chest Lockdown... You are the one you are the best When I’m with you baby It’s just me and you I don’t care for your clothes your hair I just want you to tell me what you want me to do In lockdown... She said I should go down Lockdown... Came off in her dressing gown Lockdown... Pulls aside her underwear Lockdown... She don’t let me come up for air air air air ah ah ah ah Hey Jakey whatcha doing in there? Nothin’ You busy? No

Hi it’s me, cellblock 7315. Lil’ Jakey here has had to resort to the telescreen for some live music. Yeah it’s the pits. Anyway, he falls asleep and dreams his own musical desires. (Unrecorded lyrics) Music whispers love I love you You held me up when I was alone But it was love and not confusion Saying... these wings I’m going to give you will help you get back home Fly on little sparrow Wake up there Jakey.

Hi it’s me, a couple of days out from release and poor old Jackey’s mind has put him in a spin. Now you might hear... the sky is falling Now you might hear... it’s all a scam Now you might hear... there’s forces hiding Now you might hear... it’s all in hand Every day is a tape loop honey It goes round and round Dragging across that head magnetic It’s a battleground Now you might hear... we need more money Now you might hear... we have a plan Now you might hear... a vaccine’s comin’ And you might hear... a saviours just at hand Every day is a tape loop honey It goes round and round Dragging across that had magnetic It’s a battleground (repeat) Hey yeah they don’t care It’s all about the money man (repeat)

Hi it’s me. Cell block 7315. They have released Jakey on remand subject to conditions but the guy’s still a mess. There’s all these crazy ideas going round and round in his head. Anyways, he’s spending a whole bunch of time with this little busy A.I unit. Kinda looks like a robot from Roger Ramjet, cute little thing. “Engage and collect, engage and collect...” Hey little guy. “Engage and oh, what’s on your mind?” I don’t know, there’s things I want to say but the words I can’t find.

My life is empty I got it wrong My ships lost direction the marbles are gone Now I must cry cause I’m a fool such as I That’s right, take my advice kids, get a good job at the bank or somethin’!

about

In the beyond perfect, quantised and dehumanised era of protools with it’s endless track counts and the micro editing possibilities of “we never actually played that”. In the age of unlimited access to the tsunami of streaming services and the manipulating control of the influencing gatekeepers. In the decade where the value of music has been reduced to a monthly and meaty cash cow for shareholders at the expense of musicians and writers. In the year of governmental funded albums midst the false perfection of the Instagram filter comes this - A self funded album of complete takes, quirks and mistakes that actually happened. Beautiful ugly faults imprinted into the limited frequency spectrum of the compact cassette where each listen degrades and subsequently brings it closer to it’s disappearance and death. Like a bottle of fine wine or indeed like life itself, this finite nature serves to increase the pleasure. Please enjoy the warm imperfections, saturation, hiss, distortion, wow and flutter and remember it’s just music, which is the best.

The Jakey’s Mirage story wasn’t planned as such but was the result of spending to much time with some cheap giveaway instruments and homemade apple jack in my dusty old shed via some weird nostalgic cassette fetishism. It follows Lil’ Jakey in an imaged story that runs somewhat parallel with Jacob’s journey though the COVID epidemic and lockdown and is somewhat reminiscent of Frank Zappa’s album Joes Garage.

All tracks were recorded on a Yamaha MT4X cassette 4 track recorder and a Sony TCM-400 dictaphone. Cassettes used for tracking were TDK SA’s. Compiling and mastering done via Auria.
